    ==How do I created new beats?==

This is a great question, Anon! Creating new beats with 0x40 Hues v5.0™ is actually very simple, indeed!

Before you begin, make sure you actually have a song loop to edit! You can probably find loops online, otherwise, you can make them yourself from the song you like. We here at 0x40 Hues prefer Audacity for this purpose. (Hint: use Shift-Enter to test how your loop sounds in Audacity!) Be sure that your loop is saved as a .wav file OR as a .mp3 (but only if you use the LAME mp3 encoder).

Now, in the flash, click on the gear icon. This will bring up the options window, where you'll click on EDITOR.

Enter a unique name for your new loop in the NAME box, e.g. "my_cool_loop" (without the quotation marks)

In the title box, enter the Artist - Song Name combination, e.g. "Madeon - Finale" (again, without quotation marks)

Now comes the fun part! Press the "Load Loop" button to open up a file selection dialog.
Locate your loop (.wav or LAME-encoded .mp3 file) and click "Open".

If you've done everything right so far, the loop should begin playing! Adjust your rhythm map with the DOUBLE and HALVE buttons, or your keyboard, until the beat cursor is lining up to the beats in your loop.

From here, you can edit the rhythm! Check the Beat Glossary on the INFORMATION tab to see which characters you can use in the rhythm map.

A good way to start is by lining up just the bass kicks or snare hits before moving on to a different instrument, rather than trying to do all of them at once. If you find that you need more space in between beats, you can always use DOUBLE.

Once you've finished with the loop, you can optionally add a "Buildup" and use the same process to edit its rhythm map.

When you're done, copy or save the XML file to keep your precious work!

  7. Could you edit the XML parser to allow importing/exporting the song title, artist, timing, BPM/beat length, etc.? I would like to write a script to parse Osu! or StepMania beatmaps into 0x40 readable maps. Having a full readable script like lilypond would greatly help in this process.

    1. I think I'm misunderstanding what you want, since all can be done with the current editor and respacks?
(There's no BPM or beat length in the XML, the blen is calculated live from the audio and beatmap - everything the editor gives you is also everything needed to make the rhythms work!)

I suggest exploring some of the official and/or fanmade respacks to see what they should look like, or try to put your suggestion in other words if I didn't really get it?

Looking for Osu! and StepMania songs for premapped beats is a good idea, though.

    1. There are no keyboard shortcuts for them, but the buttons are located on the Editor in between RESTART and LOAD LOOP.

    1. Yep! Just place your images in a folder and zip it up (make sure it's .zip and not .rar). In Hues, open the menu and go to the Resources tab, then load your .zip using the grey button on the lower left, or hit the L key on your keyboard.

You can also align images to the left or right and add proper names and sources for them using an .xml file. For an example, unzip a pack from the Remote Respack page on the blog.

Large, colorful images tend to lag when blurred in the flash, so you'll get the best results by imitating our defaults, but you can use whatever you'd like.

    1. Right-click on your folder and zip it up. If you use WinRAR, make sure you choose .zip and not .rar. Over on the Community Respacks page, we've got a list of places you could upload and send it to someone.

A .zip can be loaded in Hues by going to the Resources tab in the menu and clicking "Load Zips", or by hitting the L key.
